GDS Meal Codes Explained

A single letter tucked at the end of a PNR segment line — here's what each in-flight meal code actually means.

The meal code usually shows up right after the aircraft type and stops indicator on a segment line — for example, "787 E0 M" means a Boeing 787, non-stop, with a general meal service. If you're not sure how to read a specific line, paste it into the free converter and it'll be labeled automatically.

M
Meal
A general/unspecified meal service — the most common code, used when the exact meal type isn't broken out separately.
B
Breakfast
A full breakfast service, typically on flights departing in the early morning.
L
Lunch
A lunch meal service, typically on midday flights.
D
Dinner
A dinner meal service, typically on evening or overnight flights.
S
Snack
A lighter snack service rather than a full meal — common on shorter flights.
R
Refreshment
Light refreshments only, typically drinks and a small item rather than a meal.
K
Continental Breakfast
A lighter breakfast service — pastries, fruit, and beverages rather than a hot breakfast.
H
Hot Meal
A hot meal service, distinguishing it from a cold snack or refreshment-only service.
C
Alcoholic Beverages Complimentary
Indicates complimentary alcoholic beverages are included with the service.

Meal Codes — FAQ

What does the meal code in a PNR mean?
The meal code is a single letter in the raw PNR — usually shown right after the aircraft type and stops information — indicating what in-flight food or beverage service is planned for that segment. "M" for a general meal and "S" for a snack are the most common.
Is the meal code guaranteed, or can it change?
The meal code reflects the airline's planned service class for that route and aircraft, not a guarantee for a specific passenger — actual meal service can vary by fare class, route changes, or operational decisions made closer to departure.
